Biman Bangladesh Airlines is facing increasing criticism over its passenger service, following a series of mechanical failures and schedule disruptions.
Experts suggest that before purchasing or leasing new aircraft, the airline’s management must undergo reforms. It should focus on state-of-art training of skilled pilots, aerospace engineers, and cabin crew before procuring new aircrafts. Experts causioned that the airline will continue to face challenges, if managed poorly, reports UNB.
According to aviation experts, managing the airline with ad-hoc staff or inefficient bureaucratic personnel will not suffice. A permanent, skilled, and commercial workforce is crucial for the airline’s future success.
Experts also emphasize that in the aircraft purchasing process, priority should be given to small aircraft or regional aircraft, as maintenance costs are lower for these types.
In recent weeks, Bangladesh Airlines has been plagued by recurring mechanical faults. Some planes are grounded while others, after repairs, have been cleared to fly. Regular schedule disruptions and cancellations have significantly affected passenger satisfaction and the airline’s reputation.
Over the last month, at least nine aircraft, both domestic and international, have experienced various mechanical issues. While major accidents have been avoided, these incidents have raised concerns about the airline’s maintenance procedures and service standards.
A source within Bangladesh Airlines revealed that the process of leasing two aircraft to reduce passenger inconvenience is nearing completion, with plans for new aircraft purchases also under consideration.
As part of diplomatic negotiations with the United States to reduce the trade deficit and remove additional tariffs, the Bangladesh government has decided to purchase 25 aircraft from US manufacturer Boeing.
The acquisition will be implemented in phases, according to sources from the Ministry of Commerce. However, the airline has not yet signed any agreements.
Currently, Biman Bangladesh Airlines operates a fleet of 19 aircraft, including 14 Boeing kites from the USA and five Dash-8 Q400 from Canada. The Boeing fleet comprises four Boeing 737-800s, four Boeing 777-300ERs, four Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, and two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.
