Bhutan has stressed the need to deepen cooperation with Bangladesh in regional trade and the energy sector, particularly renewable power.
Bhutanese Ambassador Dasho Karma Hamu Dorjee raised the issue during a courtesy call on Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir Tuesday morning.
The discussion focused on expanding bilateral trade and investment as well as strengthening regional collaboration. Joint ventures in renewable energy, especially solar and hydropower, were highlighted.
Muqtadir said that while South Asian nations together have a combined GDP of nearly $59 trillion, intra‑regional trade remains close to just 1 percent.
“Strengthening commercial ties among neighbours is essential,” he said, adding that short‑distance hydropower plants along border areas could be mutually beneficial.
Congratulating Muqtadir on his new role, the ambassador said Bhutan is keen to further intensify bilateral trade ties.
She pointed out that Bhutan is only about 100 kilometres from Bangladesh’s Burimari border, making trade and investment convenient and profitable.
He added that Bhutanese students studying in Bangladeshi medical colleges return home to serve their communities, fostering cultural exchange between the two countries.
Additional Commerce Secretary (FTA) Ayesha Akter and Bhutan’s Minister Counsellor (Trade) Dawa Shering also attended the meeting.
