A joint meeting between the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Buyers Forum was held on Wednesday at the BGMEA Complex in Dhaka, focusing on strengthening partnerships for a sustainable supply chain in the global fashion industry.
The meeting brought together over 40 apparel brands and BGMEA leaders to discuss strategies for sustainable development in the apparel sector.
Key topics included the imposition of a 20 percent tariff on Bangladeshi apparel by the United States, the introduction of a Unified Code of Conduct, product diversification, labour reforms, renewable energy adoption, and Bangladesh’s preparation for LDC graduation.
BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan emphasised the importance of labour reforms and a more ethical, sustainable industry. He called for cooperation in formulating a Unified Code of Conduct to simplify the audit process and reduce pressure on factories.
Brand representatives highlighted the need for improved logistics, resolving NBR and customs complexities, and prioritising environmental sustainability to meet international standards. They also discussed expanding sourcing from Bangladesh and integrating young fashion designers into factory-level operations.
BGMEA leaders urged apparel brands to support entrepreneurs through better pricing models and efficiency strategies to enhance the industry’s competitiveness.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from both sides to work collaboratively towards a more sustainable and innovative future for Bangladesh’s apparel sector.
