Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) conducted operations across the country in April, seizing smuggled goods worth over Tk101.38 crore, according to a press release issued on Friday.
According to BGB data, the seized items included 1.478kgs of gold, 25.125kgs of silver, 90 diamond nose pins, 4,075 sarees, 2,342 three-piece sets, shirts, shawls, and blankets, 3,951 ready-made garments, 1,099 meters of raw fabric, 537,131 cosmetic items, and 2,355 imitation products.
Other confiscated goods consisted of 1,453,799 fireworks, 4,385 cubic feet of timber, 1,546kgs of tea leaves, 33,067kgs of betel nuts, 156,257kgs of sugar, 48,015kgs of fertiliser, 23,150kgs of coal, 525kgs of yarn/fishing nets, 500 mobile phones, 2,310 mobile displays, 40,025 pairs of glasses, 1,649 kgs of assorted fruits, 3,218kgs of edible oil, 1,022kgs of onions, 3,272kgs of garlic, 1,154kgs of cumin, 39,874kgs of fuchka, 2,312kgs of dried fish, 481,509 pieces of shrimp fry, 2,141kgs of coffee, and 605,048 chocolates. The BGB also seized 832 cows and buffaloes, 3 stone idols, 18 trucks and covered vans, 5 pick-up trucks, 6 private cars and microbuses, 1 trolley, 36 boats, 29 CNGs and easy bikes, 50 motorcycles, and 19 bicycles.
In terms of weapons, the recovered items included 1 G-3 rifle, 1 air rifle, 1 locally made pistol, 1 shotgun, 99 Molotov cocktails, and 40 petrol bombs.
The narcotics and intoxicants seized comprised 666,256 yaba tablets, 3.8kgs of heroin, 1.615kgs of cocaine, 8,153 bottles of Phensedyl, 11,391 bottles of foreign liquor, 87 litres of local liquor, 2,050 cans of beer, 1,303 kgs of cannabis, 164,660 packets of bidis and cigarettes, 31,307 narcotic tablets and injections, 3,629 bottles of Eskaf syrup, 635,199 assorted medicines and tablets, 8 bottles of LSD, and 88,776 Anagra and Senegra tablets.
During the operations, BGB arrested 143 smugglers involved in drug trafficking and other smuggling activities. Additionally, 400 Bangladeshi citizens and 13 Indian nationals were detained for illegal border crossings, with legal actions taken against them. Meanwhile, 464 Myanmar nationals attempting to enter Bangladesh were sent back to their country.
