In a significant move to support the successful implementation of the National Fisheries Week-2025, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has inaugurated its own initiative, “BGB Fisheries Week-2025.”
The week-long program, which began on Thursday, was officially launched by Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, director general of the BGB, at the BGB headquarters in Pilkhana.
The ceremony kicked off with the release of fingerlings of various fish species into the pond adjacent to Shaheed Captain Ashraf Hall. This gesture symbolized the BGB’s commitment to promoting fish farming as part of the national effort to bolster food security and nutritional intake.
In his address, Major General Siddiqui emphasised the importance of fish in Bangladesh’s cultural identity.
“Fish is an essential part of our diet and culture. Around 60 percent of our protein intake comes from fish, which is not only nutritious but also healthier compared to other animal-based proteins,” he said.
Siddiqui further highlighted that fish farming is not just crucial for meeting the nation’s nutritional needs but also plays a vital role in providing income and employment opportunities.
Referring to the theme of National Fisheries Week-2025, he said:, “Let us establish sanctuaries, fill the nation with native fish.”
The BGB Director General urged the renovation and proper utilisation of ponds and water bodies within BGB installations to enhance fish farming efforts.
He also encouraged BGB personnel to actively participate in these national initiatives, contributing to the overall goal of nation-building.
Siddiqui called upon everyone to play their part in the success of Fisheries Week-2025.
“By cultivating native fish, we can address protein deficiencies and strengthen our heritage as a fish-and-rice-loving nation, paving the way for a knowledgeable and capable generation.”
The inauguration event saw the attendance of senior officers, junior officers, other personnel, and civilian staff from BGB headquarters.
