BGB destroys drugs worth Tk1,322cr in Cox’s Bazar

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has destroyed seized contraband drugs worth over Tk 1,322 crore at the 34th BGB Battalion ground in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday afternoon.

The seized drugs included the largest haul of Yaba tablets along with various other narcotics and contraband items.

The destroyed contraband items were included 2,33,949 Yaba tablets, 140.049 kg of crystal meth (ice); 61,491 cans of beer; 22,155 bottles of foreign liquor; 25.998 kg of heroin; 4.405 kg of cocaine; 3,37,642 packs of cigarettes.

The market value of the destroyed drugs, as estimated by BGB, stood at Tk 1,321 crore 90 lakh, 59 thousand and 116.

BGB Cox’s Bazar Region Commander, Brigadier General Mohammad Aksar Khan, stated that the drugs were confiscated by battalions from the Ramu and Bandarban sectors in various operations and no one could be detained during the time of those raids. These items were formally destroyed in accordance with legal procedures.

He emphasized BGB’s commitment to a “zero tolerance” policy on drug smuggling, particularly along the Bangladesh–Myanmar border. Under the directives of the Ministry of Home Affairs, BGB continues to intensify anti-narcotic operations to achieve a drug-free Bangladesh.

In addition to the destruction, BGB reported arresting 2,693 individuals involved in drug trafficking during recent operations. Drugs worth Tk 895.37 crore were seized from these suspects and handed over to police for further legal action.

Abu Saleh Mohammad Obaidullah, additional commissioner of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission; Mohammad Nazmul Hossain, senior judicial magistrate of Bandarban; Md Saifuddin Shahin, superintendent of police; Md. Shahidul Alam, additional district magistrate, Nahid Hasan Sourav, assistant director of the Narcotics Control Department (Teknaf Special Zone), were present at the event, among others.
