Just weeks after publicly calling for the resignation of Bangladesh national football team head coach Javier Cabrera, Shakhawat Hossain Bhuiyan Shaheen has been removed from his role on the Bangladesh Football Federation’s (BFF) National Teams Committee.
Shaheen confirmed to *Bangla Tribune* that he received an official notification on Thursday, signed by BFF Vice President and National Teams Committee Chairman Tabith Awal. The letter informed him of his dismissal from the committee but did not provide a specific reason for the decision.
Despite being relieved of his duties overseeing national team affairs, Shaheen will retain his position as a member of the BFF Executive Committee and will continue contributing to football development projects.
“I have received the letter signed by the chairman today. I have been relieved of my duties,” Shaheen told the press. “But it is not an issue for me — I remain part of the executive committee. However, I still believe that for the sake of Bangladesh football, Javier Cabrera should resign. This is something that many people also want.”
Shaheen’s dismissal follows his pointed remarks during a press conference at BFF House on 14 June, where he openly demanded that Cabrera step down. His public criticism of the head coach was unusual in Bangladeshi football, drawing widespread attention.
Curiously, no disciplinary action has been taken against two other executive committee members who also made controversial remarks in recent weeks, prompting questions about consistency in BFF’s internal governance.
Shaheen’s removal highlights growing tensions within the federation as scrutiny mounts over the national team’s performance and the leadership under Cabrera. Whether the decision will ease internal discord or fuel further debate remains to be seen.
