Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Aminul Islam Bulbul has claimed he received a threatening phone call urging him to withdraw from the upcoming BCB elections, prompting a formal request for personal security support.
Bulbul, who recently announced his candidacy for the October elections, said he was contacted by an anonymous caller who warned him against running. “Would it be a problem if you don’t run for the election? It’d be better if you don’t,” the caller reportedly said. Speaking to a private television channel, Bulbul admitted, “Security is a big issue. I’m genuinely scared. The call came two or three days ago.”
In response to the incident, the BCB submitted a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs requesting a personal security guard for Bulbul. The letter, dated Thursday, 4 September, was issued by BCB CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury and addressed to the Secretary of the Public Security Division.
It stated: “Considering the upcoming BCB Board of Directors Election 2025, the matter of ensuring the President’s security is of utmost importance. Additionally, he is required to travel regularly to various locations across the country, including Dhaka, as part of his official duties. In light of the overall situation, the deployment of security personnel to ensure the President’s daily safety and to handle any untoward incidents is deemed essential.”
The Ministry of Home Affairs has yet to comment publicly on the request. The BCB elections are scheduled for October, with tensions beginning to rise as candidates begin their campaigns.
