The Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association (BARVIDA) has called for the elimination of discriminatory practices in the registration of imported vehicles at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).

The demand was made during a meeting with the Honorable Advisor to the Ministry of Roads and Bridges, Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, on July 21, 2025.

Currently, BARVIDA claims that imported vehicles must first be registered under the importer’s name and then again under the buyer’s name, which they argue is legally incorrect. In contrast, newly imported vehicles are registered only once. BARVIDA has demanded that this procedure be immediately changed.

Furthermore, BARVIDA has raised concerns about the significant differences in registration fees between reconditioned and new vehicles. The organisation has called for an end to this inequality to create a fairer system for all vehicle registrations. They also emphasised the importance of simplifying the entire registration process to make it more customer-friendly.

During the meeting, BARVIDA leaders proposed that government-approved dealers, rather than the BRTA, be authorized to handle vehicle registration and renewals. According to them, this change would help eliminate harassment and the involvement of middlemen in the process.

The Honorable Advisor responded by directing the BRTA to ensure that vehicle buyers do not need to visit BRTA offices multiple times for registration. Additionally, the Advisor instructed the BRTA to look into the possibility of conducting vehicle fitness tests through advanced technology-based private sector workshops, as suggested by BARVIDA.

The meeting also touched on the broader issues of improving traffic management in Dhaka and addressing road accidents across the country.

BARVIDA’s delegation at the meeting included the organization’s Secretary General Riaz Rahman, Vice President Mohd Saiful Islam Somrat, Joint Secretary General Syed Jaglul Hossain, Organizing Secretary Jobaer Rahman, and Planning and Development Secretary S.M. Monsurul Kabir.
