Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon, former MP from Habiganj-4, has been shown arrested in an attempted murder case filed with Mugda Police Station in connection with last year’s July uprising.
On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq granted the police petition to show Sumon arrested in the case.
At 10:07 am, Sumon was brought to the courtroom from the lockup under tight police security. A hearing was held regarding the police application to show him arrested in the case. After the hearing, the court granted the plea, and Sumon was returned to the courtroom lockup.
According to the case documents, on 18 July last year, during the July uprising, Supreme Court lawyer Abdul Aset Shamim was returning home from work when he was allegedly struck by rubber bullets in his hand, forehead, chest, jaw, and abdomen on Babu Doctor’s Lane under Mugda Police Station.
Shamim later recovered after receiving treatment. On 1 September, he filed a case with Mugda Police Station naming 51 people as accused, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sumon was named as the 25th accused in the case.
Barrister Sumon was previously arrested on 21 October at around 1:30 a.m. from the Mirpur area in the capital.
