A 15-year-old with Bangladeshi roots has made history in the United States. Cavan Sullivan became the youngest player ever to start a match for Philadelphia Union, and the second-youngest in Major League Soccer (MLS) history, when he was named in the starting line-up against Nashville.

Sullivan, aged 15 years and 280 days, is only behind the legendary Freddy Adu, who was 14 years and 334 days old when he started for D.C. United in 2004. But for Philadelphia, Sullivan is now the youngest player to start a game in the club’s history.

Born and raised in the US, Sullivan’s Bangladeshi background has become a point of pride for many in the South Asian football community. His rise through the ranks of American football has been closely followed, and this latest milestone has only added to the excitement surrounding his future.

The match itself ended in heartbreak for Philadelphia, who conceded a stoppage-time penalty to lose the game. However, Sullivan had already left his mark. He played 61 minutes, his longest spell in an MLS match to date. His statistics showed room for growth, with a 62.5 percent pass completion rate from 15 attempts, an expected goals value of 0.07, and one yellow card for a foul. Yet, his influence was far greater than the numbers.

Sullivan looked fearless with the ball at his feet. He tried to make inroads from both wings and brought an attacking flair that belied his age. His movement, confidence, and desire to get involved were evident throughout his time on the pitch.

Although it was his first time starting in MLS, it was his third appearance overall. His debut came last July when he became the youngest-ever player to feature in the league at 14 years and 293 days. That broke Freddy Adu’s long-standing record by 13 days.

Top clubs in Europe have already taken notice. Manchester City have secured a deal for Sullivan to join the English side when he turns 18. The move is expected to be completed in 2028.

From a Bangladeshi background to the bright lights of American football, Cavan Sullivan’s journey is already becoming a remarkable story. His name is now in the record books, and his future promises to be even more extraordinary.
