A 23-member delegation of Bangladeshi journalists has wrapped up a three-day visit to Kunming, the capital of China’s Yunnan Province, with prospects of strengthening bilateral cooperation in the healthcare sector.
On the final day on Friday, the delegation toured Kunming Tongren Hospital and Kunming Eye Hospital, observing advanced treatment facilities and high standards of patient care, according to a message received in Dhaka.
At Kunming Tongren Hospital, the visitors were briefed on the institution’s capabilities as a Level-3, multi-specialty private general hospital offering services in clinical treatment, prevention, rehabilitation, health management, medical education and international academic exchanges.
Hospital authorities said they have received Bangladeshi patients suffering from critical diseases and intellectual disabilities. They showcased the International Spinal Cord Injury Centre, which provides advanced surgical interventions for acute and chronic spinal injuries and intensive rehabilitation programmes backed by neuro-regenerative research.
Vice President Shen Ling told the delegation the hospital has developed modern treatment facilities and gathered more than 100 medical experts across 37 clinical departments, including cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, oncology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, urology, gynaecology and a dedicated health management centre.
She said the hospital is equipped with advanced imaging, ultrasound and laboratory technology, ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment. For international patients, a rigorous multidisciplinary process is in place to provide standardised care and ensure safety, she added.
Ling noted the hospital’s experience in treating complex congenital heart diseases, difficult orthopaedic cases and refractory internal medicine conditions, and said a second-phase expansion is under way to establish new international outpatient, inpatient and oncology centres.
At Kunming Eye Hospital, the delegation observed specialised ophthalmic treatments including laser surgery, advanced diagnostic imaging and comprehensive patient care. Hospital authorities said they are working to simplify procedures for Bangladeshi patients, from communication to admission and support services.
CEO Zhang Min said the private facility offers treatment comparable to public hospitals, receiving hundreds of foreign patients annually from countries including India and Russia. She invited Bangladeshi patients to contact the hospital by email with details of their eye conditions.
The delegation also visited Walvax Biotechnology Co, one of China’s leading vaccine producers, known for supplying safe, effective and high-quality vaccines for domestic and international markets.
The visit was arranged by the Chinese government to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Bangladesh. It was led by Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, with support from the Bangladesh Consulate in Kunming.
The tour concluded with visits to the Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall and Yunnan Ethnic Village. A press conference was held at a hotel where DPS Majumder and Consul General Mohammad Khale outlined initiatives to make medical treatment in China more accessible for Bangladeshis.
Earlier on Thursday, the journalists visited the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University and met provincial health officials and heads of public hospitals. They also toured the Kunming International Flower Market.
