A theatre performance in Toronto took an alarming turn on Saturday when Bangladeshi actor and director Mahmudul Islam Selim collapsed on stage and was taken to hospital. He was reportedly admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).
Selim was performing the lead role in ‘Dewan Gazir Kissa’, staged by theatre group Prachya Pratichya, when the incident occurred at around 8pm local time on 31 October.
According to eyewitnesses, he suffered a serious cardiac complication during the performance. He received immediate medical attention and was rushed to hospital, where doctors admitted him to the ICU.
The auditorium was packed with spectators when Selim suddenly fell ill, leaving the audience deeply concerned. News of the incident has since caused anxiety among members of the Bangladeshi community, theatre practitioners and cultural activists in Toronto and elsewhere in Canada.
His wife, Lovely Begum, has appealed to everyone to pray for his recovery. Family members, colleagues and admirers are also hoping for his speedy return to health.
Selim is a recognised figure in Bangladesh’s theatre, television and film industries. He was actively associated with Nagarik Natya Angan and has contributed to Bengali theatre as both an actor and director.
Even after moving to Canada, he remained involved in promoting Bangla language, literature and culture. Through his performances and direction, he has helped sustain Bengali theatrical activities among expatriate communities.
His sudden illness has deeply unsettled fellow artists and cultural activists in Toronto, with many awaiting updates on his condition.
