Bangladesh women’s youth hockey team endured a heavy 11-0 defeat against Japan in their opening match of the U-18 Asia Cup on Friday.
Making their debut in the tournament, the young Bangladeshi side showed commendable resistance early on, managing to hold off the Japanese attack and conceding just one goal in the first quarter. Japan, one of the dominant forces in Asian women’s hockey, added three more goals across the second and third quarters.
However, Bangladesh’s defence crumbled in the final quarter, as Japan ran riot with seven goals in the last 15 minutes to complete a dominant victory.
Despite the one-sided result, Bangladesh will look to bounce back against a comparatively less formidable opponent, Uzbekistan, in their second match on Saturday.
In contrast, the men’s U-18 team started their campaign on a positive note with a convincing 3-0 win over Hong Kong. They are set to face Sri Lanka in their second fixture tomorrow.
