The third round of trade talks between Bangladesh and the United States commenced today in Washington, according to a statement from the Chief Adviser’s press wing.

Leading the Bangladeshi delegation, Commerce Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin and National Security Advisor Dr. Khalilur Rahman are engaging in three days of discussions with their US counterparts.

Bangladesh is optimistic about a positive outcome, based on the progress made in previous rounds of talks, the statement said.

The talks come at a time when Bangladesh faces a steep 35 per cent reciprocal tariff on its goods imposed by the Trump Administration, significantly higher than the sub-20 per cent tariff rates faced by competitors like Vietnam and India.

Seeking a more level playing field in its largest export market, Bangladesh is focusing on narrowing its trade gap with the US. Immediate steps include placing an order for 25 Boeing aircraft, increasing imports of US wheat, and exploring ways to facilitate greater private sector imports of US cotton.
