Bangladesh Under-19s fell to their first defeat in the ongoing tri-nation series in Zimbabwe, losing to South Africa by five wickets at the Harare Sports Club on Wednesday.
Having secured victories in their opening two matches against South Africa and hosts Zimbabwe, the young Tigers were unable to maintain their winning momentum. A lack of meaningful partnerships saw them dismissed for 175 in 44.5 overs.
Captain Azizul Hakim led from the front with a steady 59 off 81 deliveries, putting together a 57-run fourth-wicket stand with Rizan Hossain. However, the dismissals of Rizan and Md Abdullah in quick succession triggered a collapse. Azizul’s dismissal in the 30th over further dented Bangladesh’s hopes of posting a strong total.
Lower-order batter Kalam Siddiki offered some late resistance with an unbeaten 49 off 61 balls, but with little support from the tail, Bangladesh were bowled out well before completing their 50 overs. South Africa skipper Jason Rowles led the bowling effort, finishing with figures of three for 35.
In reply, the Proteas U-19 side were made to work for their victory. Bangladesh’s medium pacers struck early, with one claiming three wickets to give the side a glimmer of hope. However, a composed 57 from Armaan Manack and 41 from Rowles guided South Africa to a five-wicket win.
Despite the defeat, Bangladesh remain second in the three-team table with four points and are still in contention for a place in the final. Zimbabwe are yet to register a win in the series.
