Bangladesh is opening its first robotic rehabilitation centre, making it a major step forward in advanced medical care for patients with paralysis and long-term nerve disorders. A pilot project began at July 10 with at the Specialised Hospital of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) in Shahbagh, Dhaka. Developed with assistance from China, the centre is built to meet the international standards and will provide cutting-edge, technology-based treatments.
The facility houses 62 robotic devices, including 22 powered by artificial intelligence (AI). These robots will help with providing precise physiotherapy, nerve rehabilitation, and long-term medical care based on a patient’s needs.
Ahead of the launch, seven biomedical engineers from China trained 27 local doctors and physiotherapists to operate the high-tech equipment. Victims of the recent July student protests with long-term injuries will receive free robotic treatment. The centre also plans to expand services to general patients while keeping the cost affordable.
This development marks a significant milestone for Bangladesh’s healthcare, marked by technological advances and renewed hope for those living with severe mobility challenges.
