Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Mahmud Hasan Khan and Christian Brix Møller, ambassador of Denmark to Bangladesh, announced a series of collaborative steps to strengthen the country’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector during a meeting on July 28, 2025, at the BGMEA Complex.

According to a press release, the discussions centered on sustainability, circularity, and energy efficiency in the RMG sector, with a particular focus on improving energy audits and facilitating green transformation.

Key decisions included strengthening the partnership between Bangladesh and Denmark, with a commitment to advancing energy-saving measures, including rooftop solar projects, in the country’s garment factories. Ambassador Møller requested BGMEA’s cooperation in conducting energy audits across various factories. These audits, supported by Denmark, will analyse energy usage and recommend energy-saving measures to improve sustainability in Bangladesh’s industrial sector.

Another significant outcome was a focus on the Generalized System of Preferences Plus (GSP+) facilities. BGMEA President Khan highlighted Bangladesh’s challenges in accessing these benefits after graduation from LDC status and sought Denmark’s support to advocate for Bangladesh’s interests with EU policymakers.

Khan also raised concerns over the declining trend of garment exports from Bangladesh to Denmark since the 2023-2024 fiscal year. He called on Denmark to use its influence to address the issue, while also urging support in mobilising international brands to endorse a Unified Code of Conduct for the apparel sector to foster greater ethical and sustainable business practices.

The two sides also discussed the progress of Denmark-supported initiatives like CREATE, PaCT, and SWITCH2CE, aimed at fostering Bangladesh’s green industrial transformation and sustainability efforts in the garment sector.

This collaboration reflects the shared commitment to addressing global sustainability goals, with both parties focused on energy efficiency, clean technology, and climate change adaptation. BGMEA President Khan expressed gratitude to Denmark for its continuous support and emphasised the importance of these initiatives in transforming Bangladesh’s RMG industry into a global leader in sustainability.
