Police arrested three young men in connection with the killing of Zahidul Islam Parvez, a final-year textile engineering student at Prime Asia University.
The arrests were made early today (Monday) during a police operation in Dhaka’s Mohakhali Wireless Gate area. The suspects were identified as Al Kamal Sheikh alias Kamal (19), Alvi Hossain Zunaid (19), and Al Amin Sani (19)—all former students of Banani Bidyaniketan School.
Banani thana officer-in-charge (OC) Russel Sarwar said that CCTV footage confirms the presence of these three individuals at the scene. “Preliminary interrogation suggests their direct involvement in the murder. Based on their information, further efforts are underway to arrest others involved.”
AKM Moinuddin, the operations officer of the thana, told Times of Bangladesh, “None of the three arrested are university students. They were schoolmates of the prime suspects and responded to their call on the day of the incident.”
The case file paints a disturbing picture.
According to the complaint, the incident began Saturday afternoon (April 19) when Parvez was accused of “smiling inappropriately” at a girl near the campus. This led to an argument, during which some university students allegedly summoned an outside teenage gang. A confrontation ensued, and Parvez was fatally stabbed.
Parvez hailed from the Birunia Union of Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh district.
Parvez’s cousin Humayun Kabir later filed a murder case with Banani thana, naming eight individuals—both university students and outsiders—as accused. The case also lists 20 to 30 unnamed persons.
Police say they are investigating possible links to teenage gangs and student politics. Authorities are working to identify the masterminds and bring all responsible to justice.
