Leaders of Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP) on Monday called for the Election Commission to scrap the registrations of Awami League, Jatiya Party and the AL-led 14-party alliance on charges of committing genocide.
A seven-member delegation of the GOP submitted a written petition to Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the EC Secretariat at Agargaon in the capital.
The petition mentioned that the council of advisers on May 10 decided to ban on all activities of the Awami League, including in cyberspaces under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Citing AL’s alleged role in the “July Genocide”, it claims that the interim government’s decision to ban all AL activities was necessary to ensure national security and uphold sovereignty in light of ongoing student and public protests.
The GOP further demanded the immediate cancellation of the registrations of the 14-party alliance partners and Jatiya Party for complicity in genocide and treason.
These parties supported the perpetrators of the alleged atrocities and played a collaborative role in enforcing a one-party fascist regime under Awami League, according to the petition.
“We expect the Election Commission to take swift action in cancelling the registrations of Awami League, Jatiya Party and their allies to address public outrage and uphold justice,” it added.
The delegation included GOP spokesperson Faruk Hasan, senior joint general secretary Hasan Al Mamun, higher council members Abu Hanif, Shakil Uzzaman, Mahfuzur Rahman Khan, Habibur Rahman Riju and Jubo Odhikar Parishad president Manjur Morshed Mamun.
Following the submission of the application, Hasan Al Mamun distributed a written statement to the reporters at the EC.
Mamun said the partners of AL, including the Jatiya Party, fully endorsed the “genocide” committed against the people of Bangladesh.
“The Gono Odhikar Parishad has called upon the EC to cancel registration of AL, JP and 14-party alliance for genocide and treason,” he said.
