Australia have named their playing XI for the opening Test of their two-match series against the West Indies, set to begin on 25 June at Kensington Oval in Barbados. The Pat Cummins-led side will be without two of their most established batters, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, in what marks a significant shift in the team’s batting line-up.

Former captain Smith, 36, has been ruled out after injuring his hand while fielding during the recent World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s. He was forced to leave the field immediately during that match, which Australia lost to South Africa by five wickets. Though initial hopes were that he might recover in time for the Caribbean tour, medical advice has deemed him unfit for the opening Test. In his absence, Josh Inglis will slot into the side at number four.

In another bold move, Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped following a prolonged dip in form. The 31-year-old had a forgettable WTC final, scoring just 17 and 22 in his two innings. While there were discussions about omitting him for the Lord’s encounter, selectors gave him a final chance to prove himself—one he was ultimately unable to capitalise on.

“Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. He understands his output hasn’t been at the level we, or he, expects,” said Chief Selector George Bailey. “We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover. We continue to value his skill and expect him to work through the challenge positively.”

Cameron Green has been promoted to number three in the batting order, reprising the role he briefly filled during the WTC final. In a further shake-up, young prospect Sam Konstas has been handed a debut and will open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja.

Other than these two key changes, Australia have retained the core squad from the WTC final. Travis Head, Beau Webster, and wicketkeeper Alex Carey make up the middle order, while the bowling attack remains unchanged with Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, and Josh Hazlewood all included.
