A case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and 220 others on charges of attempted murder.

According to the case statement, the incident took place on August 5 last year in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka during a protest organized by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The complainant, Sohel Rana (38), alleges that he was shot and seriously injured during the protest.

The case was officially registered on June 11 at Mohammadpur Police Station and was presented before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sefat Ullah’s court on Friday. The court has directed law enforcement to investigate the matter and submit a report by July 20.

The complaint claims that Sohel Rana was participating in a demonstration near the Mayur Villa intersection in Mohammadpur when, under orders from the Sheikh Hasina-led government, police and activists from affiliated ruling party organizations attacked the protesters. Rana was shot during the clash and required prolonged medical treatment, which, he says, led to the delay in filing the case.

Besides Sheikh Hasina and her son, other high-profile individuals named in the case include former Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Law Minister Anisul Huq, former Adviser Salman F Rahman, Hasanul Haq Inu, Rashed Khan Menon, former Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni, singer and former MP Momtaz Begum, actress and political figure Shomi Kaiser, and former Detective Branch chief Harun-or-Rashid.
