A mob attack on Hindu community homes in Gangachara upazila of Rangpur, caused damages estimated at over Tk 16 lakh, according to a police investigation report submitted to the court.

The report, cited by news agency UNB, states that around 1,000 to 1,200 unidentified individuals attacked 12 houses belonging to Hindu families on the night of July 26, following allegations that a local resident had made derogatory comment on the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in a Facebook post.

The attackers looted cash, gold ornaments, livestock, water pumps, and other household items from 22 families, with losses from looted property estimated at Tk 11.16 lakh. Physical damage to homes and property is valued at an additional Tk 5.5 lakh.

One of the victims named Rabindranath filed a case on July 29. In response, police arrested five individuals, who were later placed on a two-day remand on July 31 after being sent to jail.
Gangachara Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Al Imran confirmed that the initial estimate of damages exceeds Tk 16 lakh. “However, it will take a few more days to complete a comprehensive assessment,” he added.

In the wake of the attack, Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal stated that the district administration has taken steps to support the affected families.

Repairs have already been made to damaged homes and furniture, while four tubewells have been installed and dry food supplied. He added that further aid will be provided once government allocations are received.

The incident has sparked concern among rights groups and minority communities, with calls for swift justice and enhanced protection of vulnerable populations in the region. Investigations are ongoing.
