At least 30 people have died in the last two days due to landslides and flash floods in northeast India.
The affected states include Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram. In Arunachal Pradesh, nine people, including seven from two families, were killed in landslides and flash floods. A landslide swept a car off National Highway 13 (NH-13) into a deep gorge between Bana and Seppa, killing all seven passengers, reports agencies.
In Assam, five people died in landslides triggered by heavy rain and flooding. All five deaths were reported from Kamrup Metropolitan district, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Around 60,000 people in 12 districts of Assam have been affected. Continuous rainfall has caused severe flooding and landslides, disrupting transportation. Parts of National Highway 17 (NH-17), which connects Meghalaya and Assam, were damaged by floodwaters. Key sections of the highway were washed away in Boko and Chaygaon, cutting off road access between Tura and Guwahati.
One of the worst-hit areas is the Shingra Reserve Forest near Boko, about 70 km from Guwahati. A newly built stretch of NH-17 collapsed under the pressure of floodwaters, leaving many trucks stranded. Smaller vehicles had to take longer detours through Bongaigaon.
The weather department has issued red and orange alerts for some parts of Assam and orange and yellow alerts for other areas in the northeast, warning of continued heavy rainfall.
