Aston Villa are reportedly monitoring the situation of Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, with manager Unai Emery said to be keen on reuniting with the Senegal international. According to journalist Nabil Djellit over the weekend, and confirmed by Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth, Villa are keeping a close eye on Jackson’s progress at Stamford Bridge.
Emery, who handed Jackson his professional debut during his time at Villarreal, is a long-time admirer of the forward. A potential reunion could be on the cards, but the transfer may be complicated by Chelsea’s reported £100 million price tag for the 24-year-old. While Villa are keen to add to their attacking options, such a hefty fee may give the Midlands club pause, especially considering the club’s other ongoing transfer plans.
Currently, Villa’s number nine is Ollie Watkins, but despite the signing of 19-year-old Dutch forward Zepiqueno Redmond, the club are believed to be in the market for another quality striker. They parted ways with Colombian forward Jhon Duran in January, and with Watkins’ future also in question, Villa may look to strengthen further up front.
Jackson, who joined Chelsea from Villarreal for £32 million two years ago, has struggled to make a significant impact in the Premier League. He has netted 30 goals and registered 12 assists in 81 appearances for the Blues. However, his form in Spain the previous season, where he scored 12 goals and provided four assists in 26 La Liga outings, suggests he has the potential to perform at a high level.
Despite Jackson’s mixed form in England, Emery is thought to believe that he can get the best out of the striker, having worked with him before. Villa’s management are optimistic about adding quality to their squad, especially with a view to mounting a strong challenge for a top-four finish next season.
Villa also made notable additions this summer, with the signing of Turkish defender Yasin Ozcan and the imminent arrival of Brest goalkeeper Marco Bizo, who is expected to replace Robin Olsen. More departures from Villa Park are expected in the coming weeks, which could further shape the club’s transfer activity.
The Midlands club narrowly missed out on securing a Champions League spot last season, finishing sixth behind Newcastle United on goal difference. As the new campaign approaches, Villa are determined to bolster their squad in the hope of a stronger push for European qualification.
