Police have arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mohammad Ali (31) in connection with last year’s killing of Ashabul Yamini, a student whose body was thrown from a police Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) during student protests in Savar.
Dhaka Additional Police Superintendent (Savar Circle) Shaheenur Kabir confirmed the arrest occurred at 6am Sunday from Murapara area of Rupganj Police Station in Narayanganj.
The accused ASI, a resident of Kalaihati village in Kishoreganj Sadar, was wanted under an arrest warrant issued by the International Crimes Tribunal in a separate case.
“Mohammad Ali had an outstanding arrest warrant in the Yamini murder case. He has been handed over to the tribunal’s investigation agency,” stated Additional SP Kabir.
Victim Yamini was a fourth-year Computer Science student at Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST). He had joined the July 18, 2024, anti-discrimination student movement’s “Complete Shutdown” program on Dhaka-Aricha highway when police allegedly threw him from their APC. Eyewitnesses reported seeing him lying gunshot-wounded on the road.
The incident gained national attention after a video showing his body being dumped from the APC went viral.
