The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 has set July 2 for submitting formal charges in a case filed over the killing of six protesters and burning their bodies in Ashulia to conceal the evidence during mass uprising last year.

The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, passed the order on Tuesday after prosecution sought one-week time for filing the charges.

Prosecutor Saimum Reza informed the tribunal that the investigation agency of the ICT had submitted the probe report on June 19, accusing 16 individuals, including several policemen.

A total seven accused have already been arrested in the case and three are yet to be arrested, he said.

According to the prosecution, on August 5, 2024, police members in Ashulia allegedly shot six student protesters to death and put their bodies onto a police van.

Later, they set the van on fire in an attempt to make it appear as though the protesters had torched the vehicle, resulting in the deaths.

According to witnesses, one of the victims was still alive when police poured petrol on the bodies and set those on fire and burned him alive.

Earlier, on April 15, the tribunal sent former Additional Superintendent of Police (Crimes and Ops) Md Abdullahil Kafi, former Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar circle) Md Shahidul Islam and former Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Md Arafat Hossain to jail in the case.
