A man has been arrested by Bangladesh Army in connection with the assault and harassment of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda during an incident of mob violence.
According to a press release issued by the army on Tuesday, the incident occurred on Sunday evening in Sector 5, Uttara, Dhaka. The following day, a suspect named Md Hanif was detained and handed over to the police.
The statement noted that the incident took place in the presence of law enforcement officers.
Police later brought the situation under control and transferred the former CEC to the custody of the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
The army also confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest others involved in the attack.
“The Bangladesh Army remains committed to maintaining peace and order in the country and will continue necessary operations to prevent the recurrence of such unfortunate incidents,” the press release added.
