BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that April is not an appropriate time for national elections. He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after paying respects at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Saturday morning around 11:30am on Eid day.
Fakhrul said, “April experiences extreme heat, potential storms and rains, and public examinations right after Ramadan. Holding elections during this period isn’t practical. It doesn’t appear this timing was properly considered.”
He added, “Running campaigns during Ramadan will also be challenging. Our Standing Committee already deliberated on this matter and shared its opinion last night. We believe elections should be held in December – that would be most suitable for the country.”
Regarding the chief adviser’s announcement about April elections, Fakhrul remarked, “We’ve consistently maintained that elections should have been held by December. That’s what people expected, but their expectations weren’t met.”
Later, accompanied by senior party leaders, including Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, and Rizvi Ahmed, Fakhrul participated in floral tributes and prayers at Ziaur Rahman’s mausoleum.
