Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth €35m (£29.5m), after activating the Dutch international’s release clause. The 24-year-old right-sided defender has signed a five-year contract at Anfield and is expected to slot into Arne Slot’s squad as a direct replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose move to Real Madrid was also confirmed this week.
Frimpong, who helped guide Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in 2023-24, returns to English football after four successful seasons in Germany. He made 53 appearances across all competitions last season as the club finished runners-up in 2024-25.
Known as much for his charisma as his quality on the pitch, Frimpong brings both flair and steel to Liverpool’s defence. From vibrant goal celebrations—once involving team-mates shining his boots—to light-hearted post-match interviews, the former Celtic and Manchester City academy player is widely admired for his infectious enthusiasm.
“I like the pink by the way,” Frimpong once told German football expert Archie Rhind-Tutt during a live broadcast, referring to his interviewer’s jacket. “Very nice!”
Former Germany international Thomas Hitzlsperger praised Frimpong’s approach, telling BBC Sport: “Often in football it becomes so serious that player interviews can be a bit dull. Frimpong hasn’t lost any of that freshness, that sense of ‘I am enjoying what I am doing here’. He is different and he has such a refreshing tone.”
Despite his fun-loving nature, Frimpong is a serious talent. He began his career in Manchester City’s youth ranks before impressing at Celtic, and later becoming a key figure in Leverkusen’s rise under Alonso.
Chris Sutton, who won the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers in 1994-95, said: “He’s one who I think has been on the radar for a lot of the really high-profile clubs for a while now and now it is about him making that next step.”
Frimpong will face competition at right-back from Northern Ireland international Conor Bradley, who recently committed his future to Liverpool with a new four-year deal. However, with his pace, versatility and attacking prowess, Frimpong is expected to be a central figure in the club’s plans moving forward.
“You only live once, so while we’re on this earth, just have fun, love others and just give it positive energy – and then life’s good,” Frimpong has said. Life, it seems, is about to get even more exciting at Anfield.
