Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Saturday assured that all illegal firearms will be recovered ahead of the upcoming national election, urging political parties and the public for full cooperation in ensuring a peaceful and fair electoral environment.
“We have not yet been able to recover all illegal weapons, but efforts are ongoing,” the adviser told reporters after visiting the Narayanganj Police Lines in the afternoon.
“All illegal weapons will be recovered before the election. Political parties, as the main stakeholders, must play a key role in this process,” he added.
Earlier in the day, Chowdhury also visited the headquarters of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-11.
Speaking about recent progress in investigations related to the July murder cases, the adviser acknowledged the complexity of the legal process.
“Many innocent people were made accused intentionally in the cases, which is delaying investigations. We are working to ensure that only those truly responsible are charged, and that innocent individuals are not harassed,” he said.
Addressing the media’s role in supporting transparency, the adviser urged journalists to report truthfully to avoid public confusion. “Only authentic information from the Ministry of Home Affairs should be published. If the media consistently reveals the truth, it will help raise public awareness and prevent misinformation,” he said.
He added that while some vested quarters may try to create unrest, maintaining law and order remains a shared responsibility between the government and political parties.
“There is no difference between us and the political parties when it comes to ensuring peace. Their job is to win public trust and votes; ours is to ensure law and order.”
The adviser also acknowledged the evolving power of the media, stating that it now plays a crucial role in disseminating information quickly and accurately from any part of the country.
Present during the visit were RAB Director General AKM Shahidur Rahman, Dhaka Range DIG Rezaul Karim Mallick, Superintendent of Police Pratyush Majumder, and several other senior police and administrative officials.
