Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission Dr. Ali Riaz has expressed hope that a national charter may be finalized by mid-July, with the cooperation of political parties.

He made the statement on the seventh day of the second round of dialogue between political parties and the commission. The meeting began at 11:08 am at the Foreign Service Academy, with representatives from various political parties, including BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, in attendance.

At the beginning of the session, Dr. Riaz said, “We may be able to reach a charter by mid-July. Your sincere efforts and cooperation are the most crucial factors.” He added, “We are continuing this effort so that Bangladesh can transition to an accountable state structure through changes in its governing framework.”

Highlighting the public’s expectation for meaningful reforms, Dr. Riaz noted that while daily discussions may not always produce immediate breakthroughs due to differing political positions, the commission remains optimistic about reaching a common ground.

The session began with a moment of tribute to the martyrs of the July Uprising. Representatives from various political parties—including the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and the National Council for People’s Consensus (NCPC)—were present at the meeting.

To draft the national charter aimed at implementing reforms, the Commission held 45 sessions in its first round between March 20 and May 19. The second phase of discussions began on July 2.

Three major issues were scheduled for discussion in the July 2, 2025 session, which include, redefinition of electoral constituencies, caretaker government system and presidential clemency powers

The session was chaired by Dr. Ali Riaz. Other key commission members present included Safar Raj Hossain, Justice Emdadul Haque, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, and Dr. Ayub Mia.
