Alexander Zverev fought back from a set down to defeat defending champion Alexei Popyrin 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 6-3 and book his place in the semi-finals of the Canadian Open men’s event in Toronto.
The 28-year-old German has now reached his 75th semi-final on the ATP Tour, becoming the only active male player to achieve that feat alongside Novak Djokovic.
Zverev will face Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the last four after the 28-year-old came through a straight-sets win over American Alex Michelsen, 6-4 7-6 (7-3).
Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Open has confirmed that Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from next week’s tournament for “non-medical” reasons.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion has not competed since his semi-final loss to Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon and is also absent from Toronto due to a groin injury.
At 38, Djokovic is now considered unlikely to play again before the US Open, which begins on 24 August.
