Dhaka court has placed former Juba Mohila League Dhaka North city president Sabina Akter Tuhin and former Awami League Dhaka South city general secretary Shahe Alam Murad in separate criminal cases involving murder and anti-terrorism charges.

Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra granted a one-day remand for Shahe Alam Murad, former general secretary of the Dhaka Metropolitan South unit of the Awami League and current executive committee member, in a case related to the killing of a teenager during a student protest last year.

In a separate case, the court approved a two-day remand for Sabina Akhter Tuhin, former Member of Parliament from a reserved women’s seat and former president of the Dhaka Metropolitan North unit of the Juba Mohila League. She is being investigated under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Police had sought a five-day remand for Murad and a seven-day remand for Tuhin. Defense counsels Morshed Alam Shaheen (for Tuhin) and Obaidul Islam (for Murad) opposed the remand requests and applied for bail, which was rejected by the court.

State prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki argued in favour of the remand during the hearing.

Murad was arrested by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from Uttara on April 17.

According to case documents, he was allegedly involved in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Abdul Motaleb during a student-led anti-discrimination protest in Jigatola Bus Stand area on August 4, 2024.

The victim’s father later filed a murder case with Dhanmondi Police Station, naming Murad along with 179 others, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader.

Tuhin was arrested on June 22 from her family home in Nawabganj’s Aona village.

According to the case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, Tuhin, along with former Juba Mohila League vice-president Ishrat Jahan Nasrin and members of the banned groups Chhatra League and Juba Mohila League, allegedly participated in an unauthorised procession near the Planning Ministry on April 4.

Police allege the group aimed to destabilize the country by inciting unrest and demanding the resignation of Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus, thereby aiding terrorist organisations.
Both cases remain under investigation.
