Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has said that the fascist Awami League government will swiftly face trials for the killings, torture, and plundering it carried out during its regime.
He made the remarks while reading out the much-talked-about July Proclamation on Manik Mia Avenue in the capital on Tuesday.
He further said, “The people have expressed their firm intention to ensure swift and appropriate justice for the crimes committed by the fascist Awami League-led government.”
The crimes include enforced disappearances, murders, mass killings, crimes against humanity, all forms of torture and oppression, and looting of state property over the course of the last sixteen years, but especially during the July 2024 mass uprising.
In his speech, Yunus outlined the background of the July mass uprising, the fall of fascism, leading up to the formation of the current ninterim government.
He said: “The people express the intention that the student-led mass uprising of 2024 will be given appropriate state and constitutional recognition, and that this declaration will be included in the appendix of the reformed constitution by the elected government following the next election.”
“This declaration has been formulated as a reflection of the aspirations of the victorious people of Bangladesh in the mass uprising,” he added.
The chief adviser went on to say, “The people of Bangladesh declare all the martyrs of the July uprising as national heroes and express their commitment to providing all necessary legal protections to the families of the martyrs, the wounded fighters, and the student protesters.”
He further said, “The people of Bangladesh aspire to establish a democratic state system through a free, fair, and impartial election held within a reasonable timeframe, with a reformed constitution reflecting the people’s expectations – especially those of the younger generation – upholding the rule of law, human rights, and a society free of corruption, exploitation, and inequality, grounded in moral values.”
He concluded that the people expect that the rights of present and future generations will be protected through an inclusive and sustainable development strategy that is environmentally and climate-resilient.
