Akhtar Hossain has been appointed as the chief economist of Bangladesh Bank.
The confirmation of his appointment was made on Monday by the spokesperson and Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank Md Arif Hossain.
The contract-based appointment has been set for a duration of two years.
As the chief economist, he will provide policy advice to the governor and the board of directors of the central bank on the country’s macroeconomy, monetary policy, and stability of the banking sector. This position is considered highly significant in economic policymaking.
Faisal Ahmed resigned from the position of chief economist in January 2019. Following his resignation, Md Habibur Rahman, the executive director of the Research Department, was given the additional responsibility.
He became the first internally appointed chief economist of Bangladesh Bank.
Later, on February 13, 2022, he was formally appointed to the position. After he took office as deputy governor on February 28, 2024, the position of chief economist became vacant.
