Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati has been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment for viral meningitis, the Spanish football federation (RFEF) confirmed on Sunday.

The two-time Ballon d’Or winner had missed Spain’s 2–0 friendly victory over Japan on Friday, the final warm-up match for the reigning world champions ahead of the Women’s Euro 2025 tournament, which kicks off next week.

In a statement, the RFEF said that Bonmati, who plays for Barcelona, would rejoin the national squad “in the coming days,” though it remains unlikely she will feature in the team’s opening matches.

“Thanks for all the messages and to those who have helped me these past few days,” Bonmati wrote on social media. “Fortunately everything is OK, I hope to be back soon.”

Spain begin their Euro 2025 campaign on Thursday with a Group B opener against neighbours Portugal in Bern. They will also face Belgium and Italy in what promises to be a competitive group.

Viral meningitis, while generally less severe than its bacterial counterpart, still requires careful treatment. The infection affects the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, but most people recover without long-term effects.

Bonmati’s condition will continue to be monitored by Spain’s medical staff as the team assesses her fitness for the rest of the tournament.
