An Air India flight crashed into a student dormitory at BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, killing five medical students and injuring several others. According to Indian media NDTV, the victims included four undergraduate students and one postgraduate resident.

The London-bound AI171 flight from Ahmedabad crashed onto a doctors’ hostel in a residential area shortly after takeoff on Thursday afternoon. The aircraft was carrying 242 people – 232 passengers and 10 crew members.

The plane had taken off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38pm local time but crashed after reaching only 825 feet in altitude. Preliminary reports suggest technical failure may have caused the crash.

BBC Bangla reported that 50-60 students from the medical hostel hit by the plane were hospitalised. The Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) confirmed these details.
