The United States has advised its citizens residing in Bangladesh not to travel to the Chittagong Hill Tract (CHT) region of the country following recent developments over there.
“Do not travel to Khagrachhari, Rangamati and Bandarban Hill Tract districts (collectively known as the Chittagong Hill Tract) due to communal violence, crime, terrorism, kidnapping and other security risks,” says the website of the US Embassy in Dhaka.
According to CHT sources, “Recently, five tribal students of Chittagong University were abducted by unknown criminals on the morning of April 16 in Khagrachhari district.”
They said the CU students were returning to Chittagong next day by an autorickshaw. At one stage, criminals abducted them from a place near Panchhari sub-district.
The incident has triggered tensions in both Khagrachhari and Rangamati hill districts.
