Following widespread public outrage, particularly on social media, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated investigations against two former aides to two advisers of the interim government.
During a press briefing on Sunday, ACC Director General Md Akhter Hossain confirmed that intelligence operations are underway regarding allegations of corruption against the two individuals.
“We are actively working on the matter. Our intelligence unit has already begun investigations,” he said, adding that necessary actions will be taken under ACC laws and regulations.
The two individuals in question are Md Moazzem Hossain, former assistant private secretary (APS) to Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, and Tuhin Farabi, former personal officer (PO) to Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum.
The move follows demands from Jubo Odhikar Parishad, the youth wing of Gono Odhikar Parishad, which staged a march from the National Press Club to the ACC headquarters earlier in the day. A delegation submitted a memorandum demanding an immediate investigation.
Separately, three Supreme Court lawyers — Advocate Nadim Mahmud, Yasin Alfaz, and Advocate Muhammad Shafiqul Islam — filed a formal complaint at the ACC’s Segunbagicha office.
They urged the commission to investigate within 10 working days alleged corruption involving hundreds of crores of taka.
The complaint accuses Md Moazzem Hossain, Tuhin Farabi, and Dr Mahmudul Hasan – another former PO to the health adviser – of facilitating appointments and transfers across various ministries, including health, local government, public works, and roads and highways, in exchange for bribes.
Newspaper reports cited in the complaint further allege that the trio used lobbying networks to influence the postings of doctors, engineers, and officials.
The petition argues that the alleged actions constitute offences under the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and therefore fall within the ACC’s jurisdiction.
The lawyers have demanded a “visible and effective” investigation to uncover the truth.
Meanwhile, Asif Mahmud addressed the issue in a Facebook post, stating that he had personally requested the ACC to investigate the allegations against Moazzem. He expressed confidence that the investigation would reveal whether the claims are true or baseless.
