A Dhaka court has shown actress Shomi Kaiser as arrested in connection with an attempted murder case filed with Uttara East police station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq issued the order following a hearing on Wednesday (9 April).

Earlier in the day, Shomi Kaiser was brought to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) Court. She was held in the court’s custody for over an hour before being produced before the courtroom.

Sub-Inspector Sadikuzzaman, the investigating officer of Uttara East PS, submitted a petition to show her as arrested in the case, which the court approved.

According to the case documents, a protest march took place in the Azampur area in the capital’s Uttara on 4 August 2024. Among the participants was Jubayer Hasan Yusuf (20), a first-year honours student at Tongi Government College. During the rally, Jubayer was shot and he collapsed on the ground. He later recovered after receiving medical treatment.

A case was filed on 22 August at Uttara East PS in connection with the incident.

The First Information Report (FIR) named 11 individuals and accused an additional 150 to 200 unidentified persons. Shomi Kaiser’s name was not initially included. However, police later sought and obtained court permission to show her as arrested in the case.

On the night of 5 November 2024, police detained Shomi Kaiser from a residence on Road 6 of Sector 4 in Uttara. The following day, she was shown arrested in connection with another attempted murder case—specifically, the attempted murder of Ishtiaq Mahmud. She was placed on a three-day police remand for questioning and later sent to prison.

On 8 December, Shomi Kaiser filed for bail in the High Court. After a hearing, the court granted her bail for three months. However, on 12 December, the Chamber Judge Court, led by Justice Md Rezaul Haque of the Appellate Division, suspended the bail order.

Shomi Kaiser is currently in prison as an accused in two separate attempted murder cases.
