International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) has issued arrest warrants against 26 individuals, including the former vice-chancellor and proctor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), in connection with the murder of student Abu Sayeed.

The tribunal’s three-member bench, led by Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, issued the order on Monday. Earlier, the prosecution had submitted a formal charge sheet against 30 accused persons.

Chief Prosecutor Advocate Tazul Islam read out the allegations in court, following which the tribunal, after reviewing their admissibility, issued the arrest warrants.

According to court sources, the list of those facing arrest includes BRUR’s former vice-chancellor Hasibur Rashid and Rangpur Metropolitan Police’s former commissioner Moniruzzaman.

Others named in the case include former BRUR proctor Shariful Islam, former police assistant sub-inspector Amir Hossain, constable Sujon Chandra Roy, and Chhatra League leader Imran Chowdhury Akash. Several of the accused are already in custody.

On June 24, the investigation agency submitted the evidence and investigation report to the prosecution.

Reports say that a total of 30 individuals, including the former RMP commissioner, were implicated in Abu Sayeed’s killing during an anti-discrimination student movement.

Abu Sayeed, a student at BRUR, was shot dead on July 16 last year in front of the university gate in the Park crossings area of Rangpur.
