Abu Sayeed murder case: Tribunal to hear charges on July 28

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has set July 28 for the hearing of the formal indictment in the case linked to the killing of Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, during the July uprising

The three-member tribunal, chaired by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, set the date on Tuesday.

The other members of the tribunal are — Judge Md Manjurul Bashid and Judge Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.

Out of the 30 individuals named in the case, 24 are currently absconding. To represent the absconding accused, the tribunal has appointed four state-appointed lawyers.

The investigation report for the case was submitted by the tribunal’s investigation agency to the Chief Prosecutor’s Office on June 24.

Among the 30 accused are former Begum Rokeya University proctor Shariful Islam and other individuals, including police officers and Chhatra League activists.

On July 13, a notice was issued in the newspaper to arrest the 24 absconding accused in this case and have them appear in court.

Six individuals, who have been arrested in connection with the murder, include police members – Rafiul Hasan Russell, Anwar Parvez, Amir Hossain, and Sujan Chandra Roy, university proctor Shariful Islam, and Chhatra League activist Imran Chowdhury Akash.

Abu Sayeed, a 12th batch student in the university’s English department, was tragically killed by police gunfire in Rangpur on July 16, 2024, during a protest related to the quota reform movement.

The case gained further attention when Ramzan, Sayeed’s elder brother, filed a complaint against 25 individuals with the International Crimes Tribunal on January 13.

The upcoming hearing is expected to bring clarity to the legal proceedings surrounding this tragic incident.
