The formal charges in the murder case of Abu Sayeed, the first martyr of last July’s mass uprising, have been officially submitted to the International Crimes Tribunal-2.
Prosecutor Gazi Monowar Hossain Tamim confirmed this via a WhatsApp message to journalists. The Chief Prosecutor’s Office filed the charges on Monday morning, the message said.
Although the submission was initially scheduled for Sunday, it was delayed due to the Chief Prosecutor, Mohammad Tazul Islam, being occupied with official government duties, it said.
On June 24, the Tribunal’s investigation agency submitted its report to the Chief Prosecutor’s Office. The report named 30 individuals as accused in the case, including Shariful Islam, former proctor of Begum Rokeya University.
Abu Sayeed, a student of the 12th batch in the English Department at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, was shot and killed by police on July 16 last year near Park Mor, adjacent to the university. He was participating in an anti-discrimination student movement demanding reforms to the government job quota system.
The case has drawn national attention as part of the broader movement against inequality in the public recruitment system.
