Among them is the untimely loss of celebrated singer-actor Zubeen Garg, who died while scuba diving. His sudden departure has cast a pall of grief from Bollywood to his home state of Assam.
Unbelievable but true, Zubeen’s career spanned more than three decades during which he recorded around 32,000 songs in over 40 languages. He was not only a playback singer but also a composer, lyricist, actor and filmmaker.
At the time of his death, Zubin Garg’s net worth was estimated at ₹60 to ₹65 crore (2024), according to Indian media reports. His income came primarily from music, live concerts, films and brand endorsements, though his exact monthly earnings were not disclosed.
Known for his love of luxury vehicles, he owned a BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz, Range Rover Velar and a custom Isuzu SUV, along with a collection of premium motorcycles.
Born on November 18, 1972 in the Borthakur family of Tura, Meghalaya, Zubeen grew up in a household steeped in art. His father, Mohini Borthakur, was a lyricist, while his mother, Ili Borthakur, was a dancer and singer. In 1992, he devoted himself fully to music, releasing his debut album ‘Anamika’, which quickly made him a household name in the Northeast.
His nationwide breakthrough came with ‘Ya Ali’ from the Bollywood film Gangster (2006), a track that cemented his place as one of India’s most soulful voices. Beyond singing, Zubeen also acted in Assamese films such as ‘Mon Jai’ and ‘Mission China’. In 2009, he was awarded the National Film Award for the song Dilruba from the film ‘Kismat’.
