Jerome Boateng has retired from football. The former Germany defender, who won the 2014 World Cup, confirmed his decision on Friday.
The 37-year-old shared a one-minute video on social media. It showed highlights of his career and a farewell message.
“I played for a long time, for big clubs, for my country. I learned, won, lost, and grew through it all,” Boateng said. “Football has given me a lot, now it’s time to move on. Not because I have to, but because I am ready. I thank my teams, the fans, and everyone who supported me. Most of all, my family and children.”
Boateng played 76 matches for Germany and scored once. He won the Champions League twice with Bayern Munich, in 2013 and 2020. He also claimed nine Bundesliga titles.
Born in Berlin, Boateng came through the Hertha Berlin academy with his older half-brother Kevin-Prince. He later played for Hamburg and Manchester City before joining Bayern.
After leaving Bayern in 2021, he played for Lyon in France, Salernitana in Italy, and LASK in Austria. He ended his contract with LASK in August.
In recent years, Boateng faced legal issues after allegations from his ex-wife. A review ended with a warning and a suspended fine.
