BNP Standing Committee member and former commerce minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has assured that democracy will be restored in Bangladesh through the upcoming national elections scheduled for February.

He stated that the polls would give citizens the opportunity to choose their own representatives and form a government that is truly accountable to the people.

Khasru made the remarks on Friday morning while inaugurating a Small and Cottage Industries Fair, organised by the Barishal Divisional Business Forum at the Barishal Shilpakala Academy.

“BNP is preparing for the elections,” Amir Khasru said. “The polls will be held in February, so there is nothing to worry about. Everyone is waiting for the election. People in this country will finally be able to exercise their fundamental rights and elect a government that is both responsible and answerable to them.”

Describing the interim government as a “temporary administration,” he added, “We have no expectations from the temporary government. We are waiting for an elected government. This kind of event with businesspeople is being organised with the goal of forming that government.

“Preparations are already underway so that we can stand by the people from day one with public support.”

Emphasising the need to bring the economy beyond the reach of a limited group and to ensure access for the general public, he said, “We must build an international platform for producers across Bangladesh, including those involved in cottage industries.

“Cottage industry entrepreneurs can contribute to quality development in the national economy this is one of Tarique Rahman’s dreams. We are working in every division to make that dream a reality. Through this, the country’s economy will be enriched.”

Also present at the event were BNP Chairperson’s advisers Mojibur Rahman Sarwar, Moazzem Hossain Alal, and Zia Uddin Haider, among others.

The event began with the national anthem and flag hoisting ceremony. Later, chief guest Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury inaugurated the fair by releasing balloons and cutting a ribbon. The daylong event will also feature a discussion session in the afternoon, where businesspeople from the Barishal division will participate.
