The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has suspended the position of its advisor, Fazlur Rahman, for three months. A source from the party’s central office confirmed the development on Tuesday.
According to a source, BNP sent a letter to Fazlur Rahman informing him of the party’s decision.
The suspension came after Fazlur Rahman, a member of the BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council, responded to a show-cause notice issued by the party. In his written response, Fazlur Rahman stated, “I have never said or done anything to harm my beloved party, BNP, and I will not do so in the future. I have the utmost trust in the leadership of the Nationalist Party and its judgment. I hope for justice and will always remain loyal to any decision taken in the greater interest of the party.”
However, BNP sent a letter to Fazlur Rahman informing him of the party’s decision on Tuesday, informing him of the suspension, stated, “On August 24, a show-cause notice was issued in your name. Instead of providing a written reply, you requested an extension. In response to your request, the deadline was extended by 24 hours, but your reply submitted on August 26 was deemed unsatisfactory. Considering your contributions as a freedom fighter, the party has decided to suspend your membership and all positions for three months instead of taking more severe organisational actions.”
The letter further emphasised that Fazlur Rahman should be cautious in his media appearances and on social media, ensuring that his comments do not harm the country’s dignity or the party’s principles, and that they do not hurt the religious sentiments of the nation.
