For the past few months, there had been widespread speculation that Tamim Iqbal might contest for the position of president of the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB). However, close sources to the former Bangladesh captain have confirmed that he will not be contesting in CWAB’s upcoming elections, scheduled for 4 September.
Despite Tamim playing a leading role in recent CWAB meetings , which had fuelled talks of his potential candidacy , he has ultimately opted out of the race.
The CWAB election will take place on 4 September at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, with voting scheduled from 3 PM to 5 PM. This will be CWAB’s first election in 15 years. While Tamim is not running, two prominent figures , current committee convener Selim Shahed and former selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu , are reportedly in contention for the post of president.
Selim Shahed, a former match referee, is yet to collect a nomination form. Meanwhile, cricketer Mohammad Mithun is being considered for the vice-president role.
Names of senior players like Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad had also surfaced in discussions, but both have firmly denied any plans to take part in the election.
Former national captain Naimur Rahman Durjoy served as CWAB president for 15 years, while Debabrata Paul Debu held the role of general secretary. During their tenure, there were several attempts to hold elections, but none came to fruition. Following the political shift on 5 August 2024, both Durjoy and Debabrata resigned from their posts. Interestingly, Debabrata later returned as member secretary in a 13-member ad-hoc committee announced in March this year.
The mandate of the ad-hoc committee was to revise the constitution and conduct elections. Following a CWAB meeting on 4 August 2025, it was decided that the general secretary post will be dissolved. The newly elected committee will consist of a president, senior vice-president, vice-president, and eight executive members.
CWAB has already begun preparations for the upcoming election. The election commission will be chaired by BCB director Iftekhar Rahman Mithu, with Nasir Ahmed Nasu and Habibul Bashar Sumon serving as members.
