Islami Andolan Bangladesh Amir and Charmonai Pir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim has announced that no election will be allowed unless the Proportional Representation (PR) system is implemented.
Addressing the Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, he stated, “Even if any evil force or jinn has possessed you, pressuring you to read out an incomplete declaration, I must remind you that we have not yet left the streets.”
He made these remarks on Tuesday at a protest rally organised by the Dhaka Metropolitan North and South units of Islami Andolan Bangladesh in front of the North Gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
The rally demanded a legal basis for the July declaration, improve law and order situation, and polls under the PR system.
The Charmonai pir said, “We will not leave the streets until a favorable environment is restored in the country, those responsible for genocide are tried, and reforms are implemented. The key reform needed is to change the electoral system that has been in place for 53 years in Bangladesh. The PR system must be introduced here, as it is in 91 countries where peace exists.”
He further added, “Although many oppose the PR system, we have found through our survey that 71 per cent of people support it. Implementing this system is essential to tackle muscle power, extortion, and the terror of miscreants at various levels.”
Pir Rezaul Karim emphasised, “The July declaration must be given a legal basis before the election. If those who come to power after the election implement it two years later, it will be a futile effort.” He also announced that more programs will be announced in the coming days to implement their demands.
The party’s Secretary General Maulana Yunus Ahmad, and other top leaders were present at the rally. Following the event, a procession was brought out under the leadership of the Charmonai pir.
